Located in South India, this project identifies young children who have congenital heart problems; children are screened, tested and diagnosed by a reputed hospital and doctors. Along the guidelines of the GOL- Gift Of life program, surgeries are performed. This project will be funded by the Rotary Clubs of Saicity and San Diego Downtown Breakfast working with the Gift of Life program, individual donors, The GV Trust and the Rotary International District 5340 DDF. The Rotary Club of Saicity has already facilitated over 450 surgeries since 2002.
The children identified belong to communities where malnutrition is prevalent. The annual income of the families is less than $1500 and living conditions are appalling and unhygienic. So far the Gift of Life project has saved over 450 children and through exposure to Rotary, the families and communities around have also benefitted.
This grant and project will address the needs of 8 children at a cost of $1500 each. After the children undergo surgery, they are generally healthy enough to attend school and thereby get educated. This project promotes both health and literacy.
The organizations involved in this project will be:
San Diego Downtown Breakfast: This sponsoring Rotary Club will be part funding and monitoring the project, with direct access to the Rotary Club in India and the Families of the Children. 3-4 Rotarians will be involved.
Rotary Club of SAICITY: Located in Coimbatore India will be working with SRI Ramakrishna Hospital and their chief Heart Surgeon to identify, screen, operate and ensure after care of the children. 6-7 Rotarians will be involved.
GV Trust: Located in Coimbatore India, is a non-profit foundation managed by Jaishree Varadaraj to fund Rotary assisted community projects in Coimbatore, India. Members of this foundation will work along with The Rotary Club of Saicity to identify, fund and monitor the children. Once the children are healthy, GV Trust will mentor, educate and assist them through school and college, until they are self sufficient. 2 members of the GV Trust will be involved.
