Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Marcos

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Our project would provide a book to every first grade student at Title I schools in the San Marcos Unified School District of San Marcos, California augmented by the experinece of being read to by a Rotarian.

Students from socio-economically disadvantaged homes have less access to books. This limits their opportunity to develop into efficient readers. "A number of studies confirm that given access to comprehensible and interesting reading material, children and adolescents take advantage of them. More access to reading results in more student reading" (Krashen, 2004). Providing students with a book that "is theirs" and the experience of a community adult reading to them will reinforce the value of reading. It will also enhance the district's existing quality literacy instruction. The project envisions all first grade students enrolled in the school district's seven Title I schools, approximately 1200 students in more than 40 classrooms, receiving a free book.
