Lack of adequate dictionaries for school children continues to be a problem both locally and world-wide. This project will provide an English language dictionary to third grade school children in schools servicing Rancho Bernardo and its immediate area in the Poway Unified School District. The same book will be provided to children in the third grade on the American island of Guam and surrounding islands in Micronesia.
This grade level was chosen in conjunction with educators who indicated that this was the appropriate level to introduce the use of a dictionary at school and home.
The books will be purchased from the SoCal Dictionary Project and distributed personally in early September by Rotarians in San Diego and Micronesia to each third grade classroom. In addition, each book will contain a bookplate with the Four Way Test and a place for the students name. A large number of thank you notes are usually received from the students after delivery of the books. The total number of books will be 2,250.
The distribution of the dictionaries in Guam and Western Pacific will be co-ordinated by the Rotary Club of Guam. We have been very pleased with our club's relationship with this club.
