We plan to distribute dictionaries to 23 elementary schools serving more than 2300 third graders. For many children owning a book is a luxury. Having a dictionary has proven to increase pride of ownership and their ability to succeed in school.
Between August 2013 and December 2013 we will visit every school and hand out dictionaries. In our ceremony we describe the importance of an education, what Rotary is about and explain the Four Way Test. We make it fun and exciting to receive their own dictionary. We also provide books for each teacher.
If we have additional books we will make arrangements with private schools or other public schools in the area on an "as needed" basis.
In the past, 90% of our membership has participated. Our goal for 2013-14 is for that to improve to 100%.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
We distributed dictionaries to 2496 3rd graders in 25 elementary schools in 2 school districts (Denton and Lake Dallas). We had a 98% participation rate from our members. Total cost of the project was $4896.
