THE PROBLEM: We have an epidemic on our own country, fueled by poor nutritional habits combined with a sedentary lifestyle, and that epidemic is obesity. Obesity is a major contributor to the number one cause of death in the United States, heart attacks. In addition, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy reports $41 billion spent during 2006 for medical care, worker's compensation and lost productivity related to obesity and inactivity. The most disturbing fact is that obesity is largely preventable.
The City of La Mesa has taken on the challenge of encouraging its citizens to live a healthier lifestyle. For the last three years, the City has been working on creating everyday opportunities that promote physical activity and good nutrition and provide encouragement and incentives to embrace habits that lead to lifelong health and wellness through their "Ready...Set...Live Well" initiative.
THE PROJECT: The City of La Mesa would like to install durable, outdoor exercise equipment, creating a fitness park, at the Adult Enrichment Center (AEC), La Mesa's Senior Center. This would allow senior adults and area residents to take advantage of free workout equipment, nurturing a healthier lifestyle.
The equipment is made by Greenfield Sports Parks Inc. Each station costs approximately $5,000 and the city would like to install three exercise stations at the AEC. Each unit uses the individuals body mass for resistance, rather than a weighted system. The equipment is safe and durable. Please see attached pictures of a few of the pieces of equipment.
The La Mesa Rotary Club's 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 Board has approved a contribution of $4,000.00 and respectfully requests this be matched by the District for a total of $8,000.00. The City anticipates further outside grant money to complete the project, which will come to $15,000.00. However, any other Rotary donations would be gladly accepted.
If approved, the La Mesa Rotary name will be visibly listed as the major contributor to the project. Installation will take place within the year. Instructions on how to use each piece of equipment will also be displayed. Liability for potential injuries and equipment maintenance will be taken care of by the City.
