Project Description Country: Kenya Location: Machakos Total Budget: $4,000 Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene Activity Type: Water: Supply/Access Summary: This project will fund the de-silting of a community water dam in Ngando – Kenya The people of Ngando, Machakos - Kenya have watched the storage capacity of their village dam get reduced by more than 70 percent in 20 years. As a result of erosion, silt, mud and weeds have settled in the dam heavily reducing its capacity. The residents are forced to walk for miles during the dry months to collect water from other sources. Loss of livestock in the dry season and reduced home vegetable growing is now common because of diminished water storage capacity of the dam. The funds will be used to hire a bull dozer/excavator to remove silt, mud and weeds, thus returning the dam to its original state. Increased water storage capacity will particularly benefit Mwelekeo Bora, a local government licensed self-help-group of women who rely on the dam water for their sustainable vegetable growing business. Mwelekeo Bora Women group board will work with Rotarians and supervise the project to completion. Over 700 people in the Ngando area depend on this dam as their water source.
