Project Description

Country: Liberia

Location: Monrovia

Total Budget: $6,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: The Peanut Butter House produces and distributes Ready to Use Therapeutic Food or RUTF to fight malnutrition in children who live in and around Monrovia, Liberia.

The Peanut Butter House has been producing RUTF for 11 years and distributing it at no charge to malnourished children in Liberia. The Peanut Butter House produces about 1,000 packets of RUTF each year and distributes the RUTF at 3 centers. The centers serve approximately 1,000 children and their families each year. The average length of treatment is 3-4 weeks of RUTF eaten twice a day.

The Peanut Butter House recently expanded its program to provide additional services to children suffering from malnutrition. This expansion included adding a nurse to the staff, providing medicine for the children and their families and providing rice and fish to the families of children suffering from malnutrition. The cost is $1500 a month to run the Peanut Butter House and these additional services.

The cost breakdown is:

$200 for food for families (rice and fish)

$400 for the three workers on the project which includes the Nurse

$100 for the Transformation International boys and girls who work in the Peanut Butter House

$800 for supplies and ingredients for RUTF

Total $1,500/ month

This Grant will provide funding for 4 months. An NGO, the West African Development Support Organization, will provide the remaining monthly expenses for several years.

Funding Request: $4,000 in DDF and $2,000 from Club Donation for a total of $6,000

The Peanut Butter House has been closed by the local health department due to termite damage. The building was constructed with wood and it is literally being eaten by termites.

Rev. Luther Tarpeh has received bids to demolish the wooden structure and replace it with a cinderblock structure. The cost is $8,000. Rev. Luther is reaching out to his contacts to try to raise this money. He is committed to continuing to produce the RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food) for malnourished children. It will take a few months to raise the money, then a few months to construct the new building. Once the new building is in place, production of the RUTF can resume.

Fundraising efforts were successfully completed and $8,500 was raised for the demolition of the wooden structure and construction of the cement block Peanut Butter House in July, 2023 during the rainy season. When to dry season arrived, demolition and construction began. The new cement block structure should be completed by February 15, 2024. RUTF production is expected to begin in March 2024. The District Grant funds should be depleted before the Grant expires in September 2024.

In early 2023, the original wooden Peanut Butter House was infested with termites and this halted the production Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). Fundraising efforts in 2023 succeeded in raising the $8,500 needed to replace the original building. Demolition and construction had to wait until the dry season arrived. The wooden building was demolished in early 2024 and a new concrete block building was completed in late April 2024. The new building meets the World Health Organization standards for food production. RUTF production is expected to resume in June 2024 and all remaining District Grant funds will be used by August 2024 to produce RUTF.

The project was completed in late August. All grant funds were spent to produce and distribute RUTF. The Final Report has been submitted.
