Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Lake Havasu City, AZ

Total Budget: $3,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Dictionaries for all third grade students in Lake Havau City in Arizona and bike helmets for all children who attend a back to school fair

Children in Lake Havasu City, by and large, do not have access to printed reading level aligned dictionaries at home or school. Understanding how to use a dictionary is important for students in both printed and digital form. Students develop increased vocabulary, grammar, and literacy skills by using a dictionary. In addition to supporting students, academically. Lake Havasu Rotary also supports the whole child. Students need access to regular exercise. Many children do not have access to am appropriately fitting bike helmet. The physical and academic needs of children must be met to improve their overall health.

This project will meet those needs by giving all 3rd grade students a dictionary and all children who are in need of bike helmets that attend a back-to-school event a helmet.

Bike helmets will be purchased in July 2023. Bike helmets will be distributed at a back-to-school community event where students are able to get needed vaccinations. Dictionaries will be purchased in August and distributed to students at schools in October.

Club members will be involved in the ordering and distribution. Club members will teach small lessons on dictionary use in schools across Lake Havasu. At schools, Rotarians teaching lessons will talk about what being a member of Rotary means and students will look up the word Rotary in the dictionary.

Information about this event will be shared out to local news organizations and through social media.

Congratulations! The Rotary Foundation has approved our block grant, which means we'll have the funds soon.

As you know, you must wait until this point to spend any grant funds. Your final report, which is due April 30, must include

receipts for the entire budget of your grant (gather them as you go along, please) dated August 4 or later. The report form is

available in the Foundation section of rotary5495.org. Please be sure your bank information is up-to-date so there is no delay

in sending the funds by electronic transfer. This information, as well as questions about when you'll receive the money, should

be addressed to our District Treasurer, Lucinda General at treasurer@rotary5495.org
