For several years, Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary Club has worked with area Sawyer water filter representatives and non-profit Proyecto Agua Limpia to identify communities lacking purified drinking water sources, and to announce and organize water filter distributions. The water filters are financed by Rotarians around the world. The specific filters are Sawyer water filters (Sawyer.com) designed for ease of use in poor areas without access to clean drinking water and can last for ten or more years at a current quoted cost of $55 per filter. Access to clean drinking water will not only improve area residents health, but also improve their financial well being since the recipients will miss less work due to health issues. In many of these areas, soda costs less than drinking water, thus there is a high incidence of obesity and diabetes, not to mention parasitic diseases.
It is our goal to finance the filters through the PV Sur Rotary and have a delegation of Foothills Rotarians participate in a filter distribution in the first quarter of 2023, as we did in 2019. Our 2019 distribution included ten Foothills Rotarians plus their spouses/significant others. That 2019 trip was also coordinated through the PV Sur Rotary Club, but with only Foothills funds, no grant.
This project is bing coordinated by the Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary Club. Contacts are Sandra Stolz, slstolz@hotmail.com and Malcolm Laird, mjlaird@hotmail.com, both Puerto Vallarta residents and Puerto Vallarta Sur Club members.
Foothills Rotary members have already contributed $3100 and the Foothills Rotary BOD has contributed $500, for a grand total of $3600 available for filter purchases.
