Project Description

Country: Suriname

Location: Parimaribo

Total Budget: $10,510

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development, The environment

Activity Type: Community Needs Assessment

Summary: Perform needs assessment to develop future grant project/VTT & develop relationships with Rotary Club in Suriname

The project is to send a team of 6 Rotarians from the Pocatello Rotary Club to Paramaribo to conduct a community needs assessment, according to the guidelines of TRF, in concert with members of the Paramaribo Rotary Club (#6819) in Paramaribo, Suriname, South America. The assessment will help us to develop a future district or global grant to address one of the greatest identified needs. Our hope is that it could result in the design of a Vocational Training Team approach to that future project. A further purpose of the trip will be to build and strengthen the kind of relationship with the Rotary club there necessary for effective future project implementation. A spreadsheet of estimated expenses for this grant has been uploaded to the documents tab.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Prior to departure for Suriname, Pocatello Rotary Club and Paramaribo Rotary Club together were able to identify a specific micro economic development project to do jointly. The project enables capable, low-income girls to attend sewing classes and develop marketable skills and education to become self-directed seamstreses. The students were recruited, a vocational school identified, instructor hired, equipment and supplies purchased, and projects created to sell to a contract market. The class enables the girls to pay for and own their own sewing machine and equipment. This will provide an ongoing source of revenue to benefit themselves and their families.
