Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Nampa, Idaho

Total Budget: $10,225

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Rotarians will deliver monthly educational sessions at various locations throughout the community to at-risk students from Breaking Chains Academy.

Rotarians will deliver 8 monthly life skill sessions to students at Breaking Chains Academy at Risk youth in hopes that they understand and make a full commitment to citizenship and community engagement. Sessions will include: Personal finance & budgeting; Resume and job skill; higher education and how to pay for it; Vehicle maintenance; Grocery shopping & cooking; Leadership development, problem solving, and critical thinking; public speaking, communication skills and networking; understanding city government, engaging with community and safety officials, and community building and collaboration. We will use 8 (1/2 day) sessions at various locations in the community to educate, engage, and encourage 15 youth in the program. We will be transporting them via a Rental van to the various locations and providing breakfast and lunch. The students will each have an opportunity to take a Strength finders profile to understand their strengths. Each student who participates will receive $50 to start a checking/saving account, a tool kit for car maintenance, $25.00 to shop for groceries and an electronic tablet. The cohort will be expected to complete a service project at the end of the training with a budget of $500.00. The project will run September 2022-April 2023. The project is designed to allow students to learn more about interacting with community leaders and learning life skills at the same time assisting the community leaders and Rotarians to understand and interact with this often misunderstood community of youth.

You need to say in your narrative how many students you intend to serve in order to justify your budget. Consider changing the title of the project is something more identifiable, eg Teaching at-risk Youth Personal Responsibility. When we look at our list of projects from all the clubs, we like to be able to tell from the title what the project is about. Thanks!

Your district grant project has been included in D5400's block grant application to The Rotary Foundation. It is not yet approved. Do not place orders or spend money on the project until you hear from the district that TRF has approved our block grant (likely sometime this month), as you cannot be reimbursed for expenses incurred prior to TRF approval. Call Marianne Barker at 208 308-5617 if you have any questions. Thank you!

A grant report is due no later than May 15th, 2023. Failure to report by the deadline may impact your club's ability to receive a grant in 2023-24 Rotary year. For final report, download the report form from the administration side of the description tab. Fill it out, being sure that the expenses listed in the report match your receipts and any other documentation of expenses you provide. Upload pdf copies of your report and the receipts to the documents tab of your grant. Then click "reported", a button on the administration side of the description tab. If the project is not done, file a progress report - a history log telling us when you started the project, what % complete you are & when you plan to finish it out. Call Marianne 208 308-5617 if you have questions about reporting.
