Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Idaho Falls

Total Budget: $2,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: Volunteer Services

Summary: Support for the Meals on Wheels program offered to area seniors through the Idaho Falls Senior Center.

With high inflation and the cost of food and gas on the rise, it's never been more important to provide assistance to some of our most vulnerable residents. The Idaho Falls Senior Center which runs our county's "Meals on Wheels" program is facing a significant budgetary shortfall in providing food to seniors and disabled adults whom greatly depend upon the organization's daily meal service.

Throughout the pandemic, seniors and disabled adults residing in Bonneville County have come to rely upon the daily meal they receive either through home delivery or at the Idaho Falls Senior Center to help meet their nutritional needs. Furthermore, for many of these recipients, this daily service proves to be their only social interaction for the day. With over 66,000 meals provided by the Meals on Wheels program last year, this year is projected to see an increase of meal requests... coupled with rising costs, it is leaving the Idaho Falls Senior Center in need of not only additional funding, but also additional volunteers/staff to continue with their existing programs.

In addition to providing club funds, members of the Rotary Club of Idaho Falls will volunteer to provide home deliveries to area seniors and disabled adults lessening the burden on the Idaho Falls Senior Center staff which has struggled in filling open positions in a time of record low-unemployment rates.

The Rotary Club of Idaho Falls looks forward to supporting this program as it will greatly impact our community and the food insecurity felt by those that are most vulnerable.

The primary contact person MUST be someone in the club other than the 2022-23 club president. Please change the name and email in your application. Also, tier 3 applications require a spending plan, so please add to your description an approx. cost per meal and how many meals you will be providing for the Wheels on Meals program. Your financing should then reflect this calculation, with the club providing half the total budget. Please address these issues in your application, then start the signature process. You do this on the Administration side of the description tab. Unsigned applications are not turned in. The deadline for signed application is June 1st. Call Marianne if you need help: 208-308-5617

This project has not started; however it is slated to start the first week of June 2023. We are not expecting a reduction in overall costs as the group we're serving continues to grow. Project is expected to last a minimum of 3-4 months with the possibility of this becoming a permanent service project based on Rotarian interest. (Anticipated completion for the district grant: October 31, 2023.)
