Grant Request - Priority #2
Due to school closures, Challenger middle school is changing from a middle school to K-8 (600 students to 1000). All of the student households attending Challenger fall below the Federal poverty line. Almost 20% of the students are considered "Home insecure or transient". The school contains many refugee students, with over 25 first languages spoken on campus.
Due to the varying circumstances of the students, positive reinforcement does not necessarily come from test scores or grades. Many of the students are learning english as a new language.
In order to help the students thrive, they recieve reinforcement for positive behavior, character, and academic effort. Every week the Challenger staff gives students Bulldog Bucks. One grade level shops at the Bulldog Bodega each week. They are in constant need of items for the Bulldog Bodega. This grant will help fund an entire year for the increase of students.
The funds will purchase food and drinks, toys, games, fidgets, clothing, stickers, etc. It sounds like a simple ask, but it allows students to get excited, and stay connected to learning while they are facing many other obstacles and difficulties.
We have a middle school Interact Club at Challenger. Rotarians will be able to volunteer in the Bulldog Bodega during shopping hours. This will allow Rotarians to encourage the students and help reinforce the positive support from the school. The famillies and students will know it's a Rotary sponsored Bodega through signage and the school newsletter.
