Project Description

Country: Honduras

Location: Lancetill Botanical Garde

Total Budget: $7,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Building a Restroom Addition to Escuela Jose Trindad Cabanas School and providing furniture

The current one-room school house does not have a restroom attached to the school. The restroom will be 80 sq. ft. with 3 doors, two sinks and two toilets. The construction will be block wall with a corrugated roof.

The Greeley Centennial club is building a small addition to the classroom to accommodate more of the immediate population. We are going to purchase and install furniture for this addition.

The Honduran Department of Education will provide additional staffing and curriculum if the facilities exist to serve more students. Additionally, the parents and community members have a vested interest in their children's education. The materials and labor will all be locally sourced, and the cost to build is minimal ($46.87 per sq ft). Local families have already started to clear the land by hand to prepare for construction.

Active Rotarian Involvement:

We have partnered with the Greeley Centennial Rotary club since 2017 on various projects in the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens area schools. Prior service work has included the construction of two other modest buildings, the addition of electricity and or solar to four school sites, the purchase of uniforms and school furniture, the creation of a vocational sewing and technology center, and connecting the school to the internet, to name a few.

Members from the Greeley Centennial club have made two prior service trips to this rural area to help with the physical work and build relationships with our contacts with the community, as well as make contact with members of the Tela Rotary Club in 2017 and 2019.

They are planning another service trip in summer 2022 to participate in the project implementation and members from the Craig Rotary Club will join them. If all goes as planned, building construction should be completed in approximately three months (fall 2022).
