Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Dana Point

Total Budget: $3,000

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Introduce a video game to school kids ages 13-15 developed by Rotarians based on the 4 Way Test to a local school.

The Agents of Influence Video Game was created by two Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Newport Beach. It recently won the Grand Prize at the Aspen Institute's Information Disorder competition. This nonpartisan game was introduced to District 5320's elected leadership by Steve Bender on May 19th. It's goal is to combat "Truth Decay" by teaching youth to think critically and seek the truth through the medium of a video game- a universal recreational activity of the 13-15 year age group. Spawned by Rotary's venerable Four Way Test, it will teach them skills at the time that they are most vulnerable to believing misinformation. The three games created will provide a doorway to civic literacy and engagement in their gaming world. MBSR will coordinate with other Rotary clubs (including Laguna Niguel) and bring this platform to schools in the Capistrano Unified School District.

Anahita, the Agents of Influence video game creator, and I personally met with Ms. Cathy Thompson, Principal of the Marco Forester Middle School on August 30th, 2022. She accepted MBSR's gift of an unrestricted license of the Game.

A problem came up and the contract was not fulfilled.

I provided Anahita with a list of principal's names and contacts.

On March 3, 2023 we received confirmation from Peter Neeve that Don Juan Avila Middle School accepted the gift. Anahita had already met with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum for the Capistrano United School District. I met Peter Neeve and introduced myself to his class of students.

It is likely that we are on our way to introducing the game to Peter's students well before the academic year is over in June.
