Project Description

Country: Kenya

Location: Machakos and Taita

Total Budget: $15,500

Areas of Focus: Community economic development, The environment

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Strengthen and expand training for vulnerable community groups.

This grant will serve two community groups in Kenya and will be implemented through Paul Mue Foundation, a local non-governmental organization.

Machakos County: MITI EDUCATIONAL CENTER, ILUMYA COMMUNITY CORPS (A government licensed self-help-group).

Funds will support the group efforts in training on financial literacy, crop value addition, grafting of fruit plants, organic farming and crop rotation in response to changing weather pattens. Trained graduates will become trainers in their selected areas. In a year the program will benefit over 400 families.

The group is being trained at MITI EDUCATIONAL CENTER, tree and fruit seedling nursery. They hope to donate fruit plant seedlings to schools and churches to enhance availability of free fruits in the community.

Additionally, funds will purchase one ten-foot shipping container for the nursery site for use as office and equipment storage. Increase water capacity for dry season, provide shade covers for sensitive plants during summer, watering jugs, manure and pipes. Small amount of funds will be used as seed for table banking or marry-go-round lending during peak crop harvesting season.

Taita County: AWEK (A government licensed non-profit organization).

Grant funds will support vulnerable Women in the mining sector.

Funds will provide a one twenty-foot modified shipping container to be used for emergency shelter inside the Tsavo national park where the mines are located. The shelter will reduce wildlife/human conflict and environmental destruction. Funds will provide drinking water storage tank.

Small amount of funds will be used as seed for table banking to ameliorate the lives of the miners. In stabilizing the families of these areas through education and training, the grant will indirectly address teenage pregnancy, human trafficking, food security, self-employment, environmental destruction and other social challenges rooted in poverty trap.
