In the 2021-2022 Rotary year, the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club and Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente worked together to install a computer lab in a junior high school in a low-income community in Tijuana. The inauguration took place in May 2022. The clubs would like to work together again to install another computer lab.
Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente has identified junior high schools in low-income communities that lack computer equipment. The computer lab will provide technology related instruction to prepare students to be successful now and in the future. The school was preselected based on the following requirements: secure classroom with locks and window and door security bars, classroom used exclusively for computer classes, furniture, air conditioning, proper electrical wire installation to support the equipment, school's commitment to maintain, repair, and replace equipment.
The computer lab will have 40 computers (estimated to cost $150 per computer for a total estimated cost of $6,000) and 1 laser printer (estimated to cost $400). The cost for materials and installation is estimated to cost $1,000 bringing the total estimated cost of the project to $7,400. As of July 1, 2022, the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club has secured $3,900 for this project.
The Agua Caliente Club has been installing computer labs for over five years. To date they have installed approximately 18 computer labs and they are meeting with 6 schools to determine if they are ready for installation. Each lab benefits approximately 550 students per year. The Agua Caliente Club has committed to follow-up with each school and provide replacement equipment at a cost below market value. They report that the project has been a huge success.
