Project Description Country: USA Location: Escondido Total Budget: $1,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Providing free bilingual books to low-income students in North County Our member Edward Becerra is the head of "Education Begins in the Home" which is an organization under The nonprofit organization "Empowering Latino Futures" Edward distributes thousands of free books every year to low-income families at outdoor events such as vaccine clinics and Open House events at public schools across North County. He receives donations of used books from school libraries [older books] as well as from community members. With $1,000. he will be able to purchase approximately 100 NEW books from the discount book program "First Book." He will be selecting titles that he doesn't receive by donation but that he has many requests for -- bilingual books. Bilingual books benefit those learning English because they can read the page in the book first in Spanish and then in English and they learn more English vocabulary this way.
