Most students attending this school are food insecure. Their families do not have the financial means to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, and rely upon the school to provide daily nutritious meals. The school wishes to begin an on-going program to teach students gardening skills, educate about nutritional needs, and grow plant foods to supplement what the school has traditionally been able to provide. If enough produce can be grown, some of the surplus may be sold directly to the school district to supplement their salad bars. There will also be a cooking education component, to give students and their families the opportunity to learn how to safely prepare nutritious meals.
There have been some neighborhood tensions arising because of the ethnic make up of the student population, so we hope to be able to offer fresh produce occasionally to the neighbors of the school, to help ease those tensions.
