Our club has a long-standing partnership with Richard J. Wilson Elementary (RJW), a Title One, multilingual school that is part of FWISD. Approximately 95% of the students are economically disadvantaged. Over the years, our club has purchased technology, classroom equipment, library furniture, and supplies based on priority needs identified by the school's administration. We distribute dictionaries to the third graders and offer student recognition events six times a year called Rotary Club Star Student Celebrations. The Celebrations culminate in an end-of-the-year bike-give-away to one deserving student at each grade level. We annually hold a teacher appreciation at the end of the year. We believe our club's involvement with RJW makes a significant difference in addressing the educational needs and wellbeing of these students. We are thanked enthusiastically by the students and teachers (see attached examples).
After consulting with teachers and district personnel, RJW's principal has requested that our club fund the creation of a Think Lab for the students. A Think Lab offers a variety of learning opportunities through hands-on activities and games. Students can choose from a variety of stations, each which promotes a different thinking skill such as visual thinking, brainstorming, or deductive reasoning. RJW's principal provided the attached proposal, which outlines in greater detail the benefits of a Think Lab, the items requested, and how RJW plans to make use of this new resource. As soon as funds are available, the items will be purchased through FWISD. We expect the Think Lab to be set up early in the next calendar year. Our club will continue our ongoing projects and involvement with the school, supporting the students and teachers.
