Activity Type:
Water: Supply/Access
Summary: Provide access to potable water for 1,950 people living 48 kilometers northwest of Nekemte, Ethiopia.
In Ethiopia potable water is not always easily available to community members who live in small villages. Dr. Fekadu Tamiru Gebissa, assistant professor of geophysics at Wollega University, has developed a proposal based on the needs of the community that use the Laga Guracho spring. A community of 1,950 people use the Laga Guracho spring which has a damaged spring cap that needs repair. In addition, they would like to have a convenient water distribution point near the spring and one upright four-faucet water distribution point one kilometer from the spring. The four-faucet water distribution point will reduce the travel distance for 1,350 members of the community. This project is very similar to what the Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast has helped to accomplish in eight other villages in Ethiopia using this same technology.
The project will need to start after the big rains (probably November) and should be completed within six months. Funds will be used for materials; skilled masonry, concrete, and pipeline installers; and supervisors, technical experts, and purchaser required to ensure that water systems meet the standards. This is technical work that neither the Rotarians nor local people have the skills to implement.

Bob,
I apologize for the delay in paying your grant. For the first time we received more grant requests than DDF was available. We cannot request the DDF till the report balances. To make that happen we have decided to cut the DDF from every grant. Your DDF request of $6,000 will be reduced to $5,400.
If you have any questions please let me know.
