Project Description

Country: Honduras

Location: Greeley

Total Budget: $2,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The purpose of this project is to mitigate erosion through the building of a retaining wall around the Centro Educativo Santos Juan Moncada y Centro de Prebasica Marin Hernan Cruz school near Tela, Honduras.

Describe the project objectives:

Repairs to the Centro Educativo Santos Juan Moncada y Centro de Prebasica Marin Hernan Cruz school are needed to prevent erosion between a recent Rotary educational school project and a nearby river. Heavy rains in recent months have revealed the future potential harm to educational structures, which would keep students from being able to access the school. This is a relatively modest project, which will be be supported in part by the Office of the Honduran Secretary of Public Education. Labor will be donated by local families. A note about the frugalness of our partners in Honduras, "Note the block would only be for the front since the other two sides will be made of stone and concrete. Also, the old mesh that is good can be reused to save us a little. That is why we added 15 more bags of cement to the previous budget. Parents will support at work. Also the gate and point the various tensioners of the cyclone wire. I ask for 2 square tubes because they gave me a 5-foot valcon that we reused to center and make the gate." This project will help meet the educational needs for an increasing number of students in a growing rural area within the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens near Tela, Honduras.

Describe the benefit to the community and/or improve lives:

This project will primarily support the area of focus of Rotary International of Basic Education. In recent years, the Craig Rotary Club and the Greeley Centennial Rotary Club has partnered to expand a one-room school house within this rural community, to be able to provide schooling to kindergarteners. Since then, heavy rains have demonstrated a need to create a retaining wall. Parents and the Honduras Department of Education have requested help in mitigating this issue. Completion of this retaining wall will help students continue their education

Sustainability:

The Honduran Department of Education and the parents and community members have a vested interest in their children's education. The materials and labor will all be locally sourced, and the cost to build this retaining wall is minimal Local families have already started to clear the land by hand to prepare for construction of the retaining wall.

Active Rotarian Involvement:

The Greeley Centennial Rotary Club has been active in serving the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens for approximately 7 years. Prior service work has included the construction of two other modest buildings, the addition of electricity and or solar to four school sites, the purchase of uniforms and school furniture, the creation of a vocational sewing and technology center, and connecting the school to the internet, to name a few. We have partnered with the Craig Rotary Club and Greeley After Hours Club on many of these projects.

Members from our club have made two prior service trips to this rural area to help with the physical work and build relationships with our contacts with the community, as well as make contact with members of the Tela Rotary Club in 2017 and 2019.

Total Project Budget: $2,500

$2,500 from the Greeley Centennial Rotary and the 5440 District, consisting of $834 club dollars with matching funds of $1,666 from our district.

Publicity Plan:

Greeley Centennial Rotary will write an article as the project progresses updating both the club membership and District 5440. It is our hope that we'll be able to travel to the site in 2022 so as to have photos of project construction. We will submit the article to the local newspaper as well as post to our Facebook and X feeds.
