Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley

Total Budget: $5,250

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Poudre Learning Center staff require new support to model moving natural systems know-how out into K-8 schools.

The Poudre Learning Center (PLC) staff require support, equipment, and supplies to model how to move natural systems learning preparation out to K-8 schools. The planned in-school outreach programs will amplify the field experiences of classes of students who visit the Rotary-funded PLC InSTEM (Inspired by Nature, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) "Station on the Prairie". Greeley-After Hours Rotary (GAHR) members, working with Samantha Wolniakowski, Curriculum Specialist, and Abbey Shaneyfelt, Lead Ambassador, have arranged-- in synergy with contacts at NASA's GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program staff--to model novel ecological and sustainability awareness modules with nine K-8 classes of 25 students each at Weld School District 6 Christa McAuliffe S.T.E.M. Academy. For example, NASA's Earth to Sky contractor helps interpreters and environmental educators access and use NASA science.

Consistent with Rotary's international commitment to both education and environment, this Rotary year 2024-25 project is designed to lead up to Earth Day, April 22nd, 2025. Detailed description of project components and line-item details will be available in the third quarter of 2024. The coordinators, Ken and Paulette Weaver, and GAHR leadership team will follow up to witness and document deployment of this enriching way of reaching several hundred elementary and middle school learners prior to their engaging in proven field experience activities at the Poudre Learning Center InSTEM station.

Ken,

I apologize for the delay in paying your grant. For the first time we received more grant requests than DDF was available. We cannot request the DDF till the report balances. To make that happen we have decided to cut the DDF from every grant. Your DDF request of $3,500 will be reduced to $3,150.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Ken,

I still need you to complete a district final report and upload it and a copy of the receipts for the project or a club check to the documents area.

To download the district final report form go to the description area of the grant. Click on the administration tab and halfway down the page you will see "Click Here" to download the report.

So far grant funds have supported 8 groups, in-school and on-site engaging roughly 700 students across Kindergarten, 1st through 5th grades, & 7th grade. Aligned to state academic standards, they enhance students’ knowledge of local ecology and natural sciences. Topics are pollinators, native wildlife, habitats, aquatic macroinvertebrates, biodiversity and ecological resilience, bird adaptations, and mammal adaptations. NASA GLOBE tools and resources practice scientific skills, discuss scientific careers, collect data, and explore the topic of citizen science. Post-program feedback from McAuliffe teachers who participated in grant-supported programs shows a high satisfaction with the quality of the content and value to students.
