Summary: Provide furniture and supplies to the San Pasqual Academy for foster teens in San Diego County

We are submitting a grant request to benefit San Pasqual Academy Agricultural program.

San Pasqual Academy, is a first-in-the-nation, co-educational, residential campus for foster teens that offers San Diego County foster teens a safe, stable and caring home where they can learn the academic, social and life skills that will allow them to become productive and successful adults.

This past year the Academy expanded to accommodate 48 additional foster teens and the class of 2009 included 33 graduates. The San Pasqual Academy is making a difference in the lives of those who are part of the Academy community. The Agriculture program has shown great results in teaching their students Food Literacy and in building Vocational Literacy in the students that have taken the class and come back to the farm and work as student interns earning a small paycheck every two weeks.

The Rotarians of La Jolla Sunrise Rotary join Rotarians from throughout San Diego Couty to "work in the fields" along side the foster teens of San Pasqul Academy. The Academy's Agricultural Program is teaching the students of the Academy the importance of 'slow food', the responsibilities incumbent with farming and raising crops; and the program provides fruits and vegetables for the dining hall of the Academy. The foster teens see Rotarians at work and we serve as role models for these young people who do not have a tradditional family unit. In addition, we support the Agricultural Program through the purchase of seeds, trees, Planting supplies, and materials to build and/or repair the program's greenhouses and planting sheds.

The Scholarship Program is designed to support the continuing education needs of the graduates of the Academy. We want the foster teens to know that no student will be denied the opportunity to pursue higher education or trade school due to lack of funds.

La Jolla Sunrise Rotary joins other organizations to ensure that these opportunities are there for each student who applies.

This grant will help foster teens continue to thrive in an environment that is giving them an opportunity to be productive successful citizens of the community.

It is a top priority to expand the outdoor classroom to allow more students to study in the garden. Funds are also needed to expand the farmer's market equipment for the students weekly visits to the farmers markets. Curriculum materials like software, books, soil test kits and classroom supplies as well as funds to purchase seeds to support the crops that students are planting in the field or greenhouses to sell at the farmers markets.

The students worked very hard and were able to have their farm qualify for and were awarded "Organic Certification" last year.

Agricultural Program Budget proposal:

$2,500.00 To Expand the outdoor classroom with more tables, shade and water fountain.

$2,000.00 To provide tables, a scale, pop up cover and other supplies for the weekly farmers market.

$2,000.00 To provide curriculum materials for the new Agriculture teacher for software, reference books, and outdoor classroom supplies.

$ 1,500.00 To buy seeds for the year round planting program on the student run farm.

$ 8,000 Total grant request to support the San Pasqual Academy Agriculture Program.
