Summary: Provide STEM (Science and Engineering) funding for 44 kids in an after school program in McCall and Donnelly area.
The Payette Lakes Community Association (PLCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing programs that enrich the lives of all youth with an emphasis on at-risk children. Funds will be used for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) aspect of the program. This will include a healthy snack, instruction, and materials. PLCA 4 KIDS offers projects that encourage exploration in science, technology, engineering and math. PLCA 4 KIDS students also participate in different science projects each week concluding in a science fair at the end of the year where students display all of their projects. The PLCA program is offered on Barbara Morgan Elementary School (BRMES) grounds providing a safe and accessible location where students can walk from their classroom to the program each day without leaving the building. The location also allows PLCA instructors to work with teachers daily to more effectively assist students with academic and social challenges.Teachers have expressed that many of our students lack full parental support and would not complete their homework or get extra help if it was not a priority during the After-School Program. School administration has requested the inclusion of several students who need help with social interaction, academics or more stable environments. This indicates that school officials believe the program is making a difference in the lives of the elementary students in the district. This project will be on-going throughout the school year and ending in May 2016.
Several Rotarians volunteer their time to the after school program and are integral in its success.
