District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2017-18

Rotary Club: Anchorage

Project Title: IFFR Vocational Training

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project, led by IFFR Alaska's Al Clayton and Bob Gross, was to equip a young group of Civil Air Patrol Cadets at the Alaska Aviation Museum at Lake Hood with the necessary tools to start a build-a-plane project to train them in the highly skilled trade of light aircraft maintenance. IFFR Alaska raised matching funds from its own members and local Rotary clubs around Anchorage in order to purchase the high quality tools and tool cart to form the base of the equipment needed by the young volunteers to start their maintenance program. The money was raised throughout the winter and spring of 2017 and 2018 while the tools where purchased in May 2018. This fall, the CAP Cadet will begin their first project working on a small sheet metal project at their location at the Aviation Museum at Lake Hood here in Anchorage, Alaska.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 30 Members Lake Hood Civil Air Patrol

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The direct beneficiaries are the 30 members of the AK093 Lake Hood Civil Air Patrol Cadet Squadron. They have been given the tools and have access to the mentorship through our efforts to start this new build-a-plane project. Without this starting point, they would not have been able to begin this project. They will now have access to an amazingly powerful educational experience that will give these young people the opportunity to learn technical skills that they will be able to take with them for possible future career growth.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10 - IFFR Alaska

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

IFFR AK president Al Clayton organized the introduction to the CAP Squadron commander and identified the need. Bob Gross organized the meetings at his place of business. IFFR AK members gathered to formulate the plan to meet the need and raise the funds from the local rotary chapters. Spencer Wilson spec' out the tools, placed the order, and stored the tools.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Lake Hood CAP Squadron helped identify the need. The Commemorative Air Force Alaska Wing donated use of their hangar to store the tools and provide an initial meeting place for the CAP squadron's first build meetings.
