Rotary Club: Anchorage Project Title: Rotary Cares 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Rotary Cares for Kids is a District 5010 wide project that provides backpacks and duffel bags to children who are in the foster care system in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. We strive to provide comfort at a very difficult time in these children’s lives. Backpacks are distributed to a child when initially entering into the system. Duffel bags are given when transitioning between foster homes and when leaving the foster care system. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 354 in the Alaska and Yukon foster care system 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? To date we have delivered more than 300 units to The Office of Children’s Services in Alaska and 54 in the Yukon Territory. The beneficiaries are foster children, stories are hard to come by due to confidentiality but we did hear from a case worker that a young man was waiting outside the doors of OCS with all of his belongings in a Carrs shopping cart when the case worker arrived at work. The young man had been kicked out his foster care home without a place to go. The first thing the case worker did was retrieving a duffel bag and give it to the young man. The young man was elated to have a bag of his own and promptly began to transfer his belongings from the shopping cart to the duffel bag. The humanitarian need this project meets are alleviating suffering, basic security and maintain human dignity during a life crisis. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? All District 5010 Clubs participated. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians participated, thru their clubs, with financial contributions, on the planning and implementing process, helped with distribution and attended packing parties. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Office of Children’s Services was a cooperating organization. Their role was to develop and implement an internal system to distribute the units. All regions of OCS participated as well as Child Welfare in the Yukon. 7. Income
