District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2017-18

Rotary Club: Anchorage East

Project Title: Water Filter Distribution

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

In conjunction with the Vancouver Sunrise (WA) Rotary Club, which had a $2000 grant, we distributed a total of 162 Sawyer individual water filters (VSRC 46 filters serving 138 people, AER 116 filters serving 343 people) in several small communities in the Municipality of Cabo Corrientes, south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Distributions took place in November 2017 and January and February of 2018.

2. How many people benefited from this project? The AER share of the filters served 343 people, 4 schools and a dental clinic.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The humanitarian need was for safe drinking water that would not cost money for people with scant economic resources to buy and that did not require the use of fire wood for boiling. The beneficiaries were the families who received the filters which, if properly cleaned by back-flushing will last for more than ten years. Filters were also provided to 4 schools and a free dental clinic.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 AER Rotarians and a spouse, as well as a Grants Pass, OR Rotarian and two VSRC Rotarians and a spouse participated in the distributions.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The Rotarians who participated hands-on in the distributions filled out questionnaires, drilled buckets, explained about the water filters and how to assemble them. Then we all participated in helping the recipients assemble the filters on their buckets.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Vancouver Sunrise (WA) Rotary Club brought $2000 of their own grant money to our joint project and two of their members and a spouse participated in distributions.
