District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2017-18

Rotary Club: Fallbrook

Project Title: House Building

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

On October 7, 2017 a group of Rotarians, Interact Students, family and friends all traveled to the poor colonias of east Tijuana, Mexico to build a new home for a well deserving family.

2. How many people benefited from this project? The family who was a recipient to the home and the community at large

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Not only was the family who was given a new home and way of life a beneficiary of this project, but also the Rotarians and interact students who were given the opportunity to help in a real visible way. It was the first time many actually visited Mexico and given first hand insight into the living conditions of a family they grew to know throughout the day. They could see the make shift home the family lived in previously and then experienced the pure heart felt joy when they handed the keys of the new home to a tearful, grateful family. This experience raised the awareness of the dire need of many people all over the world and inspired us to be able to help in even a small way.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians, Interact students, family and friends with hammer and nails helped build the actual walls, stairs, roof, window frames, door frames, and outhouse of a new home. They painted the walls, cleaned the site and helped entertain the children of the family and neighbors as they gathered around the construction site.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Project Mercy is a 501 C (3) non-profit agency in San Diego which focuses on the improvement of the basic living standard and quality of life for impoverished families in the poor colonias of east Tijuana, Mexico . They facilitate the purchase of the necessary material and provide the basic building plan to build a sturdy home for the eligible family. Whatever was not finished in the one day, Project Mercy personnel return and complete the home.
