District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2017-18

Rotary Club: Fallbrook

Project Title: Project Amigo

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

In conjunction with Project Amigo, a 501C3 organization in Colima, Mexico. the Rotary Club of Fallbrook addressed the needs of a 10th grade student named Mariana Cruz. This $600 scholarship helped provide her with a school uniform, bus transportation, registration fees, books and school supplies. She also participated in Project Amigo's Homework Club which encourage setting career goals and planning for the future. We were also able to purchase a well-equipped laptop computer at a cost of $500.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Mariana Cruz, her family and friends who are inspired by her accomplishments, Project Amigo & the community at large

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Not only was our scholarship recipient a beneficiary to this project but also, Project Amigo as a whole. Supporting Project Amigo allowed the organization to grow and function. Research overwhelmingly shows that young people who graduate high school enjoy better outcomes in all areas of their lives. Her success inspires all to also reach to the stars. The attention to education is like a ripple in a pond - it impacts everyone near and far... teachers, family, friends, community, future employers....

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The Rotary Club of Fallbrook received monthly letters from Mariana giving us an update on her status and a snapshot of her life. (Letters are enclosed) We responded with encouragement and support.

One fellow Rotarian has visited projected Amigo in Colima Mexico and assisted with their current needs.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Project Amigo supports students from Colima, Mexico so that they can create their own educational opportunities and better their quality of life.To do this, they remove the financial barriers to education through scholarships. The staff also provides tutoring and mentoring during Project Amigo Homework Club. Homework Clubs also provide a way of keeping in close touch with the students so they can identify problems before they become so severe that the student is forced to drop out of school.
