Rotary Club: Encinitas Coastal Project Title: Hands of Peace Summer Program 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Hands of Peace San Diego worked with American, Israeli, and Palestinian teens to help them find their voice as leaders of change in their societies. Through an intense dialogue process, our participants develop conflict resolution and leadership skills and complete educational and leadership exercises. After the initial summer program, American alumni continue to work toward positive change in the San Diego area, while Middle Eastern alumni continue to work to affect change in their societies. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 41 teenagers participated in the San Diego program during 2017-18, plus roughly a dozen local alumni in followup programs. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries include teenage participants from the San Diego area, as well as from Israel and Palestine who learned important new skills to help them recognize that they can have meaningful and respectful conversations with the other, even if they don't agree on controversial topics. The humanitarian need focused on improving participants taking their new-found skills home and sharing information within and across societies. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Estimated 20 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians served as host families, opening their hearts and homes to teenage visitors from overseas. Not only did the program participants have a safe place to land each night, but the Rotarian hosts learned a great deal about the challenges between Israelis and Palestinians through this experience. Rotarians also lent their business and professional expertise to Hands of Peace as the organization continues to learn how to present and market itself, run events, and improve outreach in the community. 6.
