Rotary Club: La Mesa Sunrise Project Title: Books for Liberia 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Collect books and educational materials from San Diego area educational institutions. Screen and sort books into grade/subject categories. Box books, weigh boxes of books, and label boxes of books to meet USA and Liberia customs requirements. Load boxes of books into a 40 feet shipping container and ship to Monrovia, Liberia via Los Angeles port. When: Oct 2017 - March 2018. Where: San Diego at SDSU and Morena Storage facility(908 Sherman Street). 2. How many people benefited from this project? Over 20,000 Liberian school children and young adults. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Liberia School children and young adult learners. Project has high impact with short and long term educational resource improvement. Project provides 30,000 educational books and materials to schools in various districts that have, on average, a ratio of 19 students to one book. Most students have never owned a book. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? USA 48, Rotaractors 11, Interactors 4 and Liberia 10 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians: Picked up books from San Diego area schools. Sorted over 35,000 books into subjects and levels. Packed, labeled, and weighed 670 boxes of books. Manually palleted and loaded 670 boxes of books into shipping container. Donate shipping supplies (boxes, tape and makers). 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Participating organizations: 1. UPS - Donated driver and truck to haul 700 book boxes (33,000 lbs) to Los Angeles Port warehouse. 2. Compassion for African Villages - Donated packaging supplies, Donated cost of warehouse and book distribution in Liberia. 3. We Care Foundation - Provided Liberia government duty free privillages to permit books to come into Liberia at no charge. 4. Orphan Cry International - Donated funds and helpers 7. Income
