District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2017-18

Rotary Club: Del Mar

Project Title: Gamru Village School Support

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

This project is to support payment of some operating costs of a school located in Dharamsala, India for the benefit of the poor, local community. The population served is largely the children of poor, migrant workers. The specific operating costs include payment for rent, food, fuel and uniforms. These funds have provided a needed boost for the school allowing other operating funds to be allocated to other important resources.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 186 children, 8 teachers, 2 staff

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The school provides free education to the disfavored children of Dharmsala. The school opened in 2004 and was started to serve this poor population. Most of the children would not be able to attend a government school in India, because although government schools are generally free, there are some costs including the costs or uniforms and books. The families of these kids are unable to cover these required costs.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? at least 4: 2 from Del Mar; 2 from Dharamsala

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Dugan Moore and Philippe Lamoise from the Rotary Club of Del Mar visited the school in 2017. The Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dharamsala provide ongoing counsel to the school administration.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
