District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2017-18

Rotary Club: San Diego Coastal

Project Title: Homeless Teen Personal Items

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

We purchased personal items for local homeless teens to be used in welcome kits as new youth enter the program and also helped refresh their young men’s housing facility. By combining a requested need (welcome kits and supplies) with desired work that needed to be done, our club and club members were able to provide a multi-faceted approach to supporting the organization.

The project activities took place at Urban Street Angels men's housing facility in San Diego.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 15 young men as part of the Urban Street Angels program plus future young men who will be living in the housing facility

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Urban Street Angels was our partner and beneficiary. We partner closely with them and when we asked about their greatest need, they mentioned that many of their youth come to the housing facility with little to no belongings. We were able to purchase all of the items on their wish list so that each youth can be provided with a welcome basket filled with essentials as they start this new chapter of their life. The housing facility itself also needed a number of repairs, so our Rotarians helped to paint the downstairs living room, upstairs bedroom, fixed the handrail, spackled and repaired any holes in the walls and provided new curtains.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

See above and the attached pictures. This was a fairly hands on project in which we had 15 Rotarians making active repairs and improvements to the housing facility that included cleaning, repairs and painting.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

We partnered closely with Urban Street Angels. They determined what they needed most and also selected the project in which we could be helpful.
