Rotary Club: Del Mar Project Title: Ghana Scholar 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The original plan to bring this scholar to the USA to study did not work out because she was unable to get a visa. The grant funds were instead used to send the scholar to a 3 month journalism course in Ghana, register the Foundation legally in Ghana, provide funds for a start up business to support the Young Mother's Foundation which consists of a nail shop with some clothing for sale. In addition, we funded a trip to South Africa as part of the college course. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Irene Quartey was the primary beneficiary but the Young Mother's Foundation beneficiaries benefited from the support she was able to give. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Community and economic development was the primary need met. We initiated a sustainable business and provided education so that Irene can continue to help the young mothers and their children through education and revenue generation. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Janice Kurth did the fundraising and managed the finances from the US side and advised as the year progressed. Christian Debrah, Rotary Club of Accra Ghana, was the on site supervisor, received the funds and oversaw all expenditures. Christian's entire Rotary Club rallied behind this project as well, providing labor, transportation and raised additional funds for things like unexpected medical expenses, multiple visa fees, etc. 6.
