Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay Project Title: Water pond excavations 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? In Rahkine State of Myanmar, the people are impoverished and the government army is fighting the local people in the State, thus many people are fleeing from their villages. Our club has worked with the Dr. Saw MRA Aung Foundation for a few years. The Foundation works with local villagers to meet as many of their basic needs as possible. This grant funding focused on assisting the Foundation to provide water ponds to villages. The Foundation was able to arrange for pond construction in 2 villages(in the villages of Lekka and Lathuntaung), serving about 200 people in each village, and one well (in the village of Ponnakyun), again serving about 200 people. The ponds and well were constructed in February in preparation for the monsoon rains which fill the ponds typically in May. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 600 plus people 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries are the villagers of 3 villages in Rahkiine State. Until the ponds and well were constructed they had inadequate sources of water for all their needs - drinking, bathing, laundry, and for their livestock. The newly constructed ponds have muddy water which leaks from underground until the monsoon rains replenish these ponds with fresh water, and that occurs beginning in May each year (see documents). The well provides water from about 15 feet deep and that water is use-able without monsoon rains. Some villages have salt water near the surface of the ground and so pond construction is not effective, so a well is required, but wells cost more money. (see documents for financial details) 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 in Alaska, 1 in Hawaii, and the Foundation has Rotarian involvement occasionally from Yangon Clubs 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. The 3 Rotarians in Alaska, 1 in Hawaii, corresponded with the Foundation representative, Daw Tin May Aung, with whom we have worked in the past. We communicated about villagers' needs and best ways to assist. Others assisted in distributing the grant money to the Foundation via a Rotarian member of the Foundation who lives in Hawaii. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Dr. Saw MRA Aung Foundation is highly respected by the local Yangon Rotary clubs. This Foundation focuses on funding projects that will benefit the villagers in Rahkine State. Rahkine State is one of the poorest States in Burma/Myanmar. It is the location of the "ethnic cleansing" of the Rohyngia people by the Government, according to the United Nations witnesses. Many villages are affected by the violence, not just the villages where Moslems live. The Foundation and its work are well known by the local people. The locals request the services/projects they need most. The Foundation funds what they can based on donations they receive. 7. Income
