District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2018-19

Rotary Club: Wasilla Sunrise

Project Title: Rotary Signs - Trails & Falls

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club (WSRC) has a long-standing relationship with the City of Wasilla. Five years ago, WSRC built a $50,000 all-inclusive playground in the highly visible Newcomb Park at Wasilla Lake in downtown Wasilla. Based on this relationship, the City wanted to partner again with the 53 women and men of WSRC. The City had a concept for a trail along a portion of Cottonwood Creek that was within the City limits. The parcel of land had been donated to the City by First National Bank. WSRC Rotarians teamed up to clear brush and trees to create an easy access to the creek. The City has provided boardwalks and a steel bridge over the important salmon spawning creek. We anticipate in the future to extend this new public trail to further benefit the community. Specifically, for this grant, we have built six outdoor benches. Funding for this project was matched by the estate of Mark D. Lee, co-founder of WSRC in 2001. In addition, grant funds were used to place a sign at the National and State landmark of Rotary Falls on the south side of Government Peak, the new Mat-Su Borough recreation area near Hatcher Pass.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Over 500 people who enjoy walking and hiking in the great outdoors.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries of this project are the many people that will see the Rotary signage climbing Government Peak to see Rotary Falls and the many people that hike the Cottonwood Creek Trail enjoying the park benches with the Rotary wheel branded into the wood. The project is a public image endeavor in addition to betterment of the areas. Signage will share with the community how Rotary impacts our everyday lives.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? At least 25 Rotarians have participated in this project.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

WSRC Rotarians actively cleared brush and trees to clear the trail along Cottonwood Creek. In addition, WSRC sixteen Rotarians, family members and Rotary youth exchange student spent several hours assembling and painting six park benches. Another work party will be scheduled to imprint the Rotary wheel onto the benches once the benches are installed along the Cottonwood Creek Trail.

A group of twelve WSRC Rotarians and family members climbed the relatively new trail to Rotary Falls on Government Peak carrying the Rotary Falls sign. The WSRC team successfully installed the descriptive sign on the trail while building goodwill and better friendships along the way.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The City of Wasilla is a very important partner in many of the WSRC community service projects. The Club works with the City to build a better community. WSRC also worked closely with the Mat-Su Borough and State of Alaska governments to officially designate the significant water fall on Government Peak as Rotary Falls.
