The stairs have a concrete landing and lower concrete stairs that attach to treated wood beams with steel treads to the upper level (parking level). At the upper level there is a poured concrete pad with a bench. A short run of fencing will be installed in front of the bench were the drop off may be a problem. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 14,000 - Ketchikan residents have access to this public beach 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries of this project are the families and community members of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and State Parks. State Parks had an eroding dirt trail that was becoming dangerous. The new stairs provide safe access to this public area. The bench at the top will accommodate those with disabilities to view the area in a safe place. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians started by clearing brush, cutting and removing logs and bringing in a backhoe to do some additional site preparation. Rotarians also ordered the materials, built the forms, participated in the concrete pour, built the treated wood portion of the stairs, installed the steel treads and assembled and mounted the bench to the concrete pad. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? A State Parks employee was involved in some of the work parties. A local engineer and Rotarian from Rotary 2000, Fred Monrean helped with the planning design and necessary permits to complete the process. 7. Income
