District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2018-19

Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay

Project Title: Upgrade Community Park

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

In 2011, Homer-Kachemak Bay Rotary Club and the City of Homer signed an "Adopt a Park" agreement making our club responsible for some of the maintenance and upgrades to Ben Walters Park in Homer. The park facilities are aging, lacking in playground equipment, and the park is beginning to be used for nefarious activities by the younger generation. The McDonald's franchise owner expressed enthusiasm to help support our work to upgrade this park because of the close proximity to their facility and potential customer use of the park. In line with this strategy, the Club purchased a Kurt Mega Series Play Center for installation in the park.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Available for use by the apex 5000 Homer residents and all transient tourists

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The park provides relaxation and recreation space for both Homer residents and tourists. Many are drawn to the location by its proximity to McDonalds.

One of our goals was to increase the Park's recreational use which in-turn will reduce its misuse by less than desirable elements of the community.

As our continued efforts evolve over the next few years, Ben Walters Park can become a 12 month recreation ares with normal playground and picnic activity during three seasons and a location for ice skating and other activities in the winter.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 27

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

1. Cranium Cup Trivia Night. The Club raised matching funds for the grant by conducting the first annual Cranium Cup Trivia Night event at Alice's Champagne Palace during Homer's Annual Winter Carnival weekend.

2. In preparation for the installation of the Kurt Mega Series Play Center, Club members cleared brush and other debris from the park. They also painted the restroom exterior and cassembled new picnic tables for the park users.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

McDonald's Corporation contributed $1500.00 towards the purchase of the Kurt Mega Series Play Center.

The City of Homer provided trash/brush removal and other maintenance assistance. On their schedule they will prepare the ground for the installation of the Kurt Mega Series Play Centerensuring that all environmental and safety requirements are met.
