Project Title: Red Cross Food Packaging


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

On January 18, 2018, 135 Rotary International members to come together at Liberty Station Conference Center (San Diego, CA) to assemble "comfort kits" to support the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties. This was the first event of its kind for an RI International Assembly, and was designed to provide the Partners of District Governor Elects a hands-on opportunity to participate in an RI community service event. Amongst the crowd were also partners of past, current, and future RI presidents. The project took 90 minutes to prepare 2000 emergency kits.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 8000

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The event helped create 2,000 emergency kits which are given in time of need to victims of fires, flood and earthquakes. Assuming an average of four individuals helped per emergency kit, roughly 8,000 people were supported through this project.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 135

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

135 volunteers provided over 400 volunteer hours to this project. Additional volunteers helped with project logistics, including transportation, setup, clean-up. The Red Cross San Diego / Imperial Counties Chapter also provided transport of supplies, as well as the finished emergency kits to be used in a disaster

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Members of the Rotary Club of San Diego organized the event, provided logistics support, and found space for the event to take place. They also organized transportation for the participants, who were coming primarily from downtown San Diego.
