Rotary Club: Susitna Project Title: Water Safety & Literacy Progra 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Josh the Baby Otter presentations were performed in all elementary schools in the Mat-Su Borough School District. This included 43 schools, including charter and alternative schools. The presentations include handing out books with stickers and coloring pages, reading the books, singing along with Josh the Baby Otter in a full size mascot costume, and then pledging "Never to go near the water without an adult." Presentations were performed during April and May, as the ice melts and kids are tempted to go near the water. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 1700 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? All kindergarten students in the MatSu Borough, along with kids at the Wasilla 4th of July parade, Colony Days celebrations, and The Alaska State Fair. Kids are taught never to go near the water without an adult, always swim with a buddy, and to learn to float (like Josh the Baby Otter.) 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 52 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Members went to elementary schools, showed videos of Josh, dressed up in mascot costume, handed out books, and danced and pledged water safety. 6.
