Rotary Club: Juneau-Gastineau Project Title: DZ Connector Trail Replacement 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Replace old slippery planking with fabric and gravel on the Switzer Marriott trail in Juneau Alaska. At 4 work parties took place on August 25th and September 8th where Rotarian's and friends hauled gravel, removed old planking, stamped down surfacing material and removed an old wood bridge. Trail signage will be installed by Parks and Recreation in the summer of 2019. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 475 middle school students and the adjoining neighborhoods 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The students that attend the adjacent middle school benefit because they use this trail for outdoor education classes and also to walk to and from school. The neighborhoods adjacent to the trail benefit by an accessible, widen and safer trail that is not underwater and slippery. This projects provides a strong link between neighborhoods and the middle school fostering opportunities for a closer knit community in a community that has been identified as an underserved community. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 68 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians and friends participated in 4 work parties to haul old planking, lay down ground fabric and haul gravel. Rotarians solicited a donation of a 50"gangway to be use to make the trail more accessible. This donation was valued between $20,000 - $30,000. Rotarians coordinated the trail work with Juneau Parks and Recreation Department and Trailmix. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Trailmix and Juneau Parks and Recreation staff assisted Rotary members in the development and implementation of this project. Trailmix oversaw all the work parties, ordered all the supplies, provided the equipment needed at each work party. Juneau Parks and Recreation staff worked with Rotary on the overall trail plan, and signage design and will install the bench and purchase and install signs once the Parks and Recreation comprehensive sign plan is complete. Juneau Community Foundation provided $10,000 directly to Trailmix for this project. Juneau Docks and Harbor Board donated a 50' gangway that was used to make the trail more accessible, estimated value was approximately $20,000 Rotary 5010 District Grants provided a match to the local clubs contributions. 7.
