Rotary Club: Anchorage East Project Title: Wastewater Treatment System 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Barangay, Old Sagay, Philippines is one of many communities in the Philippines that were decimated by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Cooperating organization iHomes, Western Visayas is constructing duplexes for 40 low-income, displaced families. This project grant will be used to extend the existing wastewater/sanitation treatment system serving 8 homes to the new homes as well as to provide irrigation for an organic vegetable garden. Project construction began in late March 2019 and was completed in early January 2020. A multi-purpose center is planned for the future and is expected to benefit from this project. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 40 families will benefit directly from the systems connected to their homes; the entire community of est. 15,000 will benefit indirectly by the correct and sanitary disposal of the wastewater; the irrigation to the organic vegetable garden, and the future mult-purpose center 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Forty families displaced by Typhoon Yolanda will benefit from the direct connection of the wastewater/sanitation treatment system to the 40 new homes being constructed to house these families. Frankly, the entire community will share in the health benefits from the safe and sanitary disposal of wastewater. Further, an upgraded project design means that once the multi-purpose community center is constructed, it will also benefit from this project. A secondary benefit of the project is the irrigation provided to the future organic vegetable garden that is underway. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 2 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. The original chairperson of the international service committee -- a former exchange student to the Philippines -- identified a suitable project in the Philippines; established contact with the cooperating organization; developed a relationship with the project administrator; prepared the grant application and submitted it to the district committee. She had also planned and advertised a trip to the Philippines to visit the project site and help with project construction. Unfortunately, she had to step back from the committee and the club due to matters in her personal life and the trip was scrapped. The next chairperson stepped in after the project plans had languished for a few months. She contacted the local project administrator; determined that the need still existed; oversaw the transfer of the project funds; maintained contact and a relationship with the project administrator; gave encouragement to the project administrator during setbacks; helped draft the organization's final report. The projected trip to the Philippines had to be scrapped because of the time that elapsed between the first and second chairperson. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Implementation of the grant was coordinated by RC Anchorage East and iHomes, the organization responsible for construction of the new homes and the related wastewater/sanitation project as well as the organic vegetable garden. 7.
