Project Title: Baja Smiles Bone Grafts


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Necessary equipment required by the ongoing Rotary-Smiles Surgical Partnership programs for bone graft harvesting and equipment replacements for surgical project missions were purchased and installed with the mission sites. This equipment was used at the October Smiles of Los Cabos and the November Smiles of Tecate surgical mission projects in the year 2018 and will continue to be used thereafter as cases progress at the mission sites. Education in the use of the equipment and treatment of the patients was given at didactic professional conferences at each site.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 200+

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Patients scheduled for facial bone graft reconstructions have their surgical correction of Cleft Facial Deformities now made possible through the provision of this equipment. Over a dozen cases have been operated thus far this year and hundreds more will benefit over the ensuing years.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 28

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians from the clubs of Los Cabos and the Rotary Club of Tecate and the Rotary Club of Carlsbad all participated with the volunteer logistics, transportation, Accomodations, and feeding of the patients as well as provided professional followup care for the postoperative surgical patients.
