Project Title: Kids Summer Day Camps

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Funds were contributed to the Summer Sessions Scholarships for low income kids. The activities took place in and around Fairbanks as part of the Summer Sessions Summer Camp program

2. How many people benefited from this project? approximately 10 children were able to attend camp

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

See their thank you notes. We do not know exactly which camps the children chose. We can say for certain that the camps positively impact children's PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT with better understanding of

healthy food, nutrition and exercise. EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT is enhanced when the children gain confidence and experience a joy in learning that is often absent in their traditional school experiences. Children who see others have special opportunities that they are denied because they family cannot afford to have them participate begin to feel downtrodden and even angry. Participation in these camps can turn around that negative self image. Expression through the arts can be a peaceful way to reduce the stress of living in poverty. Feeling good about yourself and having positive expressions for feelings can help a child learn more ways to be SOCIALLY COMPETENT. When they go back to school in the fall, they have something exciting to share about their summer. They make new friends and learn new skills. Being exposed to new skills whether it is learning magic tricks, cooking or collecting bugs increases INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT. In many of the camps there is a literacy component that makes reading and writing meaningful. So what humanitarian need was met? How can we measure the successful development of children from low income families that gain this support in their development? It is possible this camp kept a child from becoming a "school shooter" or committing suicide. Maybe it kept them from turning to a life of crime or substance abuse. We cannot say for sure. We do KNOW it positively impacted development and that they will carry the experience with them for many years.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? approximately 35

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.
