District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2018-19

Rotary Club: San Diego

Project Title: Tijuana Service Immersion Prog

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

This year we did 5 day-trips to Tijuana, Mexico for service immersions. Each of the visits included service at Hogar Infantil La Gloria Orphanage from 1 pm- 7 pm, while the March trip included a full-day of visiting other non-profits including the orphanage from 9 am- 7 pm. Students worked to plan and organize activities to lead and facilitate with the children at the orphanage prior to each visit. These social activities included but were not limited to: pumpkin carving, cookie decorating, coloring, jewelry making, yard games, painting and other crafts. Each visit included unstructured play time with the children, the planned activity, Mass and sharing in community stories. Often students would return multiple months in a row, so they were able to establish and develop friendships with the children at Hogar Infantil La Gloria.

The extended service day on March 9th included a prayer service at the border wall, and a donation drive to help organizations aiding asylum seekers. We visited a shelter for asylum seekers in Tijuana, MX and were able to hear the stories first-hand from asylum seekers as to why they were forced to leave their country of origin. We ended the day with a visit to Hogar Infantil La Gloria orphanage

The dates of the visits were:

Saturday, October 20th

Saturday, February 9th

Saturday, March 9th, 2019 (full day)

Saturday, April 13th, 2019

Saturday, May 11th, 2019

2. How many people benefited from this project? 35 children at the orphanage, 50+ volunteer participants

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries are the children who reside at Hogar Infantil La Gloria Orphanage. There are 35+ children who reside at Hogar Infantil La Gloria, and there are less than five full-time staff for all of the children. When we come to visit, the children are given individualized attention that they do not often receive. The staff there are wonderful, but they do not have the capacity to spend one-on-one time with each child often. When OLP visits, each child is matched with a student volunteer to spend quality time together while we craft. The also helps the staff to give them a break from the fatigue of parenting 35+ children day in and day out. Since we visit roughly once a month, with many return participants, the children are able to develop lasting friendships with our volunteers, and look forward to our visit each month.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 1

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Dr. Lauren Lek supported in the planning, coordination and communication of the event.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Academy of Our Lady of Peace was the organization cooperating with the Rotary. As a partner, this experience was planned by faculty at OLP from all logistical planning details to facilitation of the service experience.
