Rotary Club: San Diego Project Title: Nicaragua Service Immersion 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Activity Type: Home renovations Project Summary: Week-long service immersion focusing on home renovations to low-income, rural communities in West Virginia. Project Description: This service immersion focuses on education of the social justice issues in the Appalachian region. Examples include the economic devastation of lost employment from coal mines closing, and the current opioid crisis wreaking havoc on the community. Daily service projects in the surrounding communities include home renovations and local business renovations alongside local families and business owners. Funding for this trip included round-trip airfare from San Diego, CA to Pittsburgh, PA, rental car, lodging and meals. Recap: This service immersion took place April 22-28, 2019. We stayed the week at Nazareth Farm, which is a farm retreat center in rural West Virginia. The cornerstones of the mission of Nazareth Farm are community, simplicity, prayer and service. Staff at the farm, and volunteers like our group, serve alongside local neighbors to address substandard housing by providing home repair. We celebrated the richness of Appalachia by building relationships between our group of volunteers and the local community. Here is the website for Nazareth Farm. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 6 families & 50+ participants 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries are low-income families in the region of Center Point, West Virginia who are in need of home repair, but are not financially capable of paying for it. These families apply for a a home repair project through Nazareth Farm. If they are selected, the will pay for the supplies for the project. They can pay through a loan over many months with zero percent interest. This makes it possible for the family to budget for this expense. The labor of the volunteers comes free to charge to the families. This humanitarian need is met, as it provides healthier and sanitary living conditions for families who were living in sub-standard housing conditions. 4.
