District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2018-19

Rotary Club: San Marcos

Project Title: Literacy Project

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The San Marcos Rotary Club purchased an age appropriate book for each first grade student in six Title 1 San Marcos Unified School District Schools. Each book had a sticker pasted inside it stating it was donated by the Rotary Club of San Marcos. The project chair received approval and teacher contact information from school district administration to arrange visits to each classroom from two Rotary members. The visits were to take place between December 2018- February 2019, where the Rotarians would read the book to the class and then that book would be given to each student to take home.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 775

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were the students who had a caring adult take the time to read to them as well as the teachers who recognized the importance of having the local Rotary Club adopt their classes. The humanitarian need that was met was the sharing of the importance of reading and making a contribution to others through the book donation, so they may then pay it forward by reading at home with family members.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 20

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

This was a hands-on project where a seasoned Rotarian paired up with a newer Rotarian. These pairs each visited all first grade classrooms at their assigned Title 1 school to read the selected book to the students. Six schools in the district were recipients of the Literacy Project.

Some Rotarians had never participated in a project like this and they received great satisfaction in distributing the books. The value received was as strong to them as to the students who received their own new book, a first for many of them. The thank you notes received from the students showed their level of appreciation for the efforts.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The San Marcos Unified School District's role was to allow this project to take place and then to provide access to the teachers contact information in the Title 1 schools.
