Rotary Club: San Diego Project Title: Sharp Arts for Healing 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? We are grateful to the San Diego Rotary and members Jean Young, Richard Coutts, MD and Suzy Spafford, who supported the Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus' Arts for Healing IPAD project. Arts for Healing brings art and music therapy and healthcare together into one exceptional program and was established to improve the spiritual and emotional health of patients who are facing significant medical challenges. The generous Rotary District grant supports our tablet music therapy program, delivered by trained and licensed staff. This program is available to patients of all ages throughout the Sharp HealthCare system. Funding assisted us to purchase several new tablets, tablet covers and wireless headphones. The IPADs will be used alongside free music production software, GarageBand, which has been evaluated in similar settings with great success. All devices purchased with these funds and software utilized during the course of the program remain the exclusive property of Sharp HealthCare for use with patients as needed throughout the Sharp HealthCare system. 2. How many people benefited from this project? As many as 500 when fully implemented. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The goals of using the iPads is to engage creative interventions to alleviate pain, lift spirits and assist with healing. Uses include music making, songbooks, and surveys with the music therapists serving: seniors, adults, adolescents and children in the inpatient behavioral health units at Sharp Mesa Vista, patients in the acute care units at Sharp Memorial, patients recovering from strokes and brain injuries in Rehab, parents of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and pregnant women on bed rest at Sharp Mary Birch. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. We are thankful for the dedicated support from San Diego Rotary members Jean Young, Richard Coutts, MD and Suzy Spafford. We are especially grateful to Dr. Coutts and Jean Young who serve on the Sharp HealthCare Foundation’s Arts for Healing Philanthropy Council as they will be closely involved with the implementation of the IPAD program and through their involvement in the Council, offer invaluable input and advocacy to Arts for Healingas well as assist us with identifying and approaching sources of funding and philanthropy. As Rotarians, they are also dedicated advocates on behalf of our patients in need and our staff who are involved with this project. We are also grateful to Rotary Club 33 President Suzy Spafford for her belief in the importance of this project. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Not applicable. 7.
