District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2018-19

Rotary Club: Del Mar

Project Title: Gamru Village School Support

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

This project supports Gamru Village School in Dharamsala, India by covering operating expenditures including rent, fresh food, food staples, trash collection equipment, tax audit fees and uniform sweaters. The population served is the children of a poor community of migrant workers.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 156 students, 10 teachers and 2 staff.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Gamru Village School provides high quality, free education to disadvantaged children of Dharamsala. The school was opened in 2004 to serve this community. Most of these children would not be able to attend a government school in India because although government schools are typically free, some costs including those for books and uniforms are not free. The families of these students do not have the resources to cover these costs.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? At least 4: 2 from Del Mar; 2 from Dharamsala.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Dugan Moore and Philippe Lamoise from the Rotary Club of Del Mar visited the school in 2017 and continue to keep up with developments and projects through communication with both the school and the Rotary Club of Dharamsala. Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dharamsala provide ongoing counsel to the school administration.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
